Look past job-title lists

Technology titles vary between organisations. A data analyst may write significant SQL; a software developer may operate cloud infrastructure; an AI engineer may spend more time on evaluation and data than on model training.

Investigate the work itself. Do you enjoy explaining patterns, designing systems, debugging code, running experiments, operating infrastructure or shaping a product around uncertain model behaviour?

Translate learning into evidence

A certificate records completion. A project reveals how you think. Use both: a structured programme to build the capability and a documented project to make it discussable.

For every project, explain the problem, users, constraints, decisions, tests, result, limitation and next improvement. The explanation should survive even when a reviewer does not use the same tool.

  • Keep repositories and documentation readable.
  • Show progress through small, meaningful commits.
  • Include tests or evaluation evidence.
  • State limitations without apology or exaggeration.
  • Connect technical choices to user or business outcomes.

A focused 90-day career exploration plan

In the first month, choose one foundation and complete regular practice. In the second, finish a bounded project. In the third, improve the project, explain it publicly or in mock interviews, and identify the next skill gap.

Do not spend all ninety days preparing to begin. Produce a small artefact in the first week and improve it as your understanding grows.
